Success Stories
ASC provides innovative anesthesia services under many circumstances. Here are just a few ways we helped others meet their anesthesia staffing needs.

From Department Turmoil To Total Efficiency
ASC recently helped a northern Michigan hospital restore order and profitability to its anesthesia department. Before ASC, the hospital employed a traditional agency staffing model. Operating expenses spiraled out of control. Surgeons threatened to leave. Schedules were in complete disarray. But after ASC introduced a more consistent and cost-effective staffing model, surgeon and care satisfaction improved drastically. Expenses were reduced by more than a million dollars. Surgical volume rose over 10%.

ASC Consulting Results In Increased Revenue
During a recent Revenue and Billing Analysis of a hospital in central Michigan, ASC uncovered over $900,000 in unbilled and uncollected anesthesia revenue during the previous twelve-month period, all due to a single issue. Additional opportunities for revenue enhancement were also identified, resulting in a total improvement opportunity of over $1,000,000. ASC proceeded to develop new internal processes and provide necessary personnel training for implementation. Within a few short weeks the issues were corrected, and controls were in place to quickly identify future problems.

A Surgical Center’s Extreme Makeover
When a successful cosmetic surgeon left an existing practice, ASC helped establish a new surgical suite in its place. ASC played an important role in developing the new facility’s patient care policies and protocols. We ensured compliance with current standards of care and identified ways of making patients feel even more comfortable. We also introduced a highly skilled anesthesia group that could meet the changing demands of a startup practice. The new cosmetic surgery center was so successful it outgrew the existing facility. So ASC further assisted in the design and construction of an additional surgery center, ready to accommodate future growth.

Making The Most Of A Hospital Merger
After four mid-size hospitals merged together into one large facility, the logistics and work cultures of their surgical departments needed to evolve. For two years, ASC provided hands-on assistance to make the merger a seamless success, including:

  • Day-to-day management of anesthesia services
  • Development of patient care policies and protocols
  • Recruitment of CRNA and physician staff
  • Equipment, supply and stocking procedures
  • A more efficient billing and fee structure
  • Compliance with JCAHO and all other regulations

ASC continues to work with this group, providing flexible staffing and consulting services. In addition, ASC worked with local universities to establish this facility as the primary site for nurse anesthesia education. This enhanced the group’s CRNA recruiting efforts and workforce pool.

Improved Anesthesia Staffing Secures Accreditation
ASC helped two physician-owned ambulatory surgery centers overcome staffing challenges and secure Blue Cross accreditation. Both centers were working under a joint commission agreement and struggling to maintain quality anesthesia staffing. ASC was brought in to improve conditions and meet surgical volume requirements within a short six-month deadline. During that time, ASC implemented the following:

  • A consistent staff of highly qualified anesthesiologists and CRNAs
  • Staffing flexibility to accommodate volume fluctuations
  • Improved surgical boarding
  • Optimum permanent staff case performance
  • New opportunities for non-owner physicians
  • Consensus on patient care policies

Now patients remark on the high standard of their anesthesia care. And the surgical volume at both facilities is up.
